Madurai a well-known tourist come pilgrim centre known for the ancient Meenakshi amman temple and it’s Dravidian architecture. Usually Madurai is a one night destination for travelers who visit only the temple. But if you plan for shopping on your trip, I suggest you to stay in Madurai for one more night and get the items at reasonable price.
The temple is surrounded by the Madurai market and you will get almost every items in the market. What I have seen most in the market is the textile shops and among them a good percentage of shops were selling Sarees.
There were shops from very small to multi-storey buildings. To escape from the heavy heat we have been to an air conditioned textile shop and we were amazed by the crowd purchasing Sarees. A huge collection of Sarees starting from rupees hundred and were selling at a fixed price. If you wish to purchase sarees on your South India trip there is no place better than Madurai.
Madurai market is also a good place to buy spices, house hold items, groceries, vegetables, stationaries, electric and electronic items etc.
There are more things to write about Madurai, the filter coffee from the street side vendor, the pure veg meals from hotel Sree Sabarees and so on.
You Must carry a Sun glass and hat to walk through the streets as the humidity is very high.0
